Photo Therapy

According to psychologist and art therapist Judy Weiser, phototherapy techniques are “therapy practices that use people’s personal snapshots, family albums, and pictures taken by others (and the feelings, thoughts, memories, and beliefs these photos evoke) as catalysts to deepen insight and enhance communication during their therapy or counseling sessions, in ways not possible using words alone.”

As a long-time practitioner of photography, I find that it has helped me develop self-knowledge and insight in guiding my life. I have used photography as an art form in my professional work informed by the principles of phototherapy, for over 20 years. This has included oral histories, community-based action projects, and individual development.
