THE ACTIVITY DOCTOR’S GUIDE TO

PERSONAL MEDICINE ONLINE

UPDATED 8/6/20

Compiled by the Activity Doctor, Dr. E. Chaya Weinstein, Ph.D., OTR/L

ecweinstein@gmail.com

Thanks to Katherine Ponte, BA, JD, MBA, NYCPS-P, CPRP of www.ForLikeMinds.com

and all others who contributed to this list.

Dear Friends,

Activities are the cornerstone of a full life. Engagement in activities has been key to human survival and development since time immemorial.

Indeed, activities are the cornerstone of the occupational therapy profession. Occupational therapists are experts in analyzing and adapting activities for all people; especially those with physical or psychiatric challenges.

Having structure in the day includes set times for sleep, meals, exercise and other forms of self-care. Basic structure then allows for the myriad activities that meet our psychological and spiritual needs, beyond the basic need for survival.

Personal Medicine is a term coined by Pat Deegan, Ph.D., the renowned disability-rights advocate, psychologist and researcher. It refers to the activities we do that bring joy, meaning and engagement to our lives. This can range from basic activities such as taking a shower daily, to prayer, meditation, playing games with family, cooking a meal, or attending school or work. The list is endless, and highly personal.

Personal medicine is a complement of pill medicine. There is no “magic pill” for mental or physical maladies, nor for the tribulations of living that we all face.

Online activities offer us a chance to connect with others, learn, express ourselves creatively, and take a break to recharge and continue our personal and collective path of development. They provide a bridge for our lives before, during and after the epidemic.

Here is a select list of activities that can enrich your day and promote connection, learning and development.  Many of these events are free. They are meant to be an encapsulation of the many nourishing and soul-sustaining activities being offered online. This is a “One Stop Shopping” sampling of some quality websites and activities. There are many more--so when in doubt, Google!

We are fortunate to live in an age where there are so many online offerings. The number of options are expanding daily. If you find any another amazing sites on your journey, please email them to me so I can include the information in later versions of this Resource Guide.

Wishing you health, safety and peace of mind,

 MOVIES & TV SERIES

(From New Plaza Cinema, NYC): Did you know that watching movies can be a great mood-boosting alternative?

·      Netflix Party enables you to watch films virtually with friends.

Movies give us a break from whatever is currently bothering us. We are transported to a different time and place and can just focus on the present moment for a short time. This gives our brains a much-needed rest from “the usual.” More: https://psychcentral.com/blog/how-watching-movies-can-benefit-our-mental-health/movies.
